The HEART-SAFE project: Home Emergency Alerting and Response Technology Survive A Fatal Event

What is the HEART-SAFE project?

The HEART-SAFE project is a collaboration of five partners in the Netherlands who plan to increase the survival rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. We are developing an algorithm that detects a cardiac arrest from smartwatch sensor data, using artificial intelligence. In addition, we are building an application that immediately notifies Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and citizen rescuers when a cardiac arrest is detected.

Why is this technology being developed?

Approximately 17,000 people in the Netherlands suffer from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) each year, and nearly half of these incidents are unwitnessed. Many people face fatal outcomes or suffer poor neurological outcomes because Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are alerted too late or not at all (unwitnessed cardiac arrest).

Who are involved in the project?

The HEART-SAFE project is a partnership between Amsterdam UMC, University of Twente, Stan b.v. and Wavy Health.
